Preface by Douglas Kirkland, Foreword by Guy Cooper

Reg Grundy is one of the key figures in the history of television, known in his native Australia and around the world for his successes as a producer and entrepreneur. Fewer are familiar with Grundy’s photographic talents, which were first recognized and emboldened by his friend, legendary celebrity photographer, Douglas Kirkland. Culled from more than four decades of archived photographs, Mother and Child is a breathtaking collection of photographs on the most universal of topics—the enduring bond between mothers and their children, shared by all living beings.

These evocative photographs take us from the red soil of the Arabian Peninsula to snowy, polar-bear inhabited corners of the arctic, offering glimpses of maternal relationships across boundaries of nation and species. Portraits of mothers as they feed, nurture, teach, and play with their young serve as a poignant reminder that all species live rich emotional and social lives, sharing so much with their human counterparts. This memorable perspective on wildlife, by a man whose vision and determination allow him to thrive at any endeavor he chooses, is a tribute to life and love in its purest form: the relationship between Mother and Child

Douglas Kirkland is one of the best-known long-term photographers of our time and has worked for Look and Life magazines, where he photographed such icons as Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, and Marlene Dietrich. He has also worked on the sets of over 150 motion pictures, many of them iconic. His numerous awards include: a Lucie for Outstanding Achievement in Entertainment Photography, The Golden Eye of Russia, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from CAPIC in Canada, and the 2010 Cinema Italian Style Award. In February 2011, the American Society of Cinematographers ASC presented him with the prestigious President’s Award.
Kirkland’s fine arts photography has been exhibited all over the world. His exhibition of Freeze Frame is now in the permanent collection of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills. His work is also in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian; the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, Australia; the National Portrait Gallery in London; the Eastman House in Rochester; and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles.
He is also a sought-after lecturer. He is a member of Canon’s Explorers of Light and an associate member of the American Society of Cinematographers.

Guy Cooper served as Chief Executive Officer of the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia for eleven years, where, among his many accomplishments, his famous elephant breeding program resulted in the first Asian elephant calf born in Australia.
